RE: that mental illness graphic that includes the line “WHAT?! You mean there’s some guy with cystic fibrosis just walking around?”

Please. Stop posting it and pretending that sort of attitude doesn’t exist.

Before I was recognized as any form of neuro-atypical, I had learned that I didn’t deserve to be in public because the symptoms of CF made me disruptive and obnoxious and scary. I still have to choose between breathing comfortably in public and dirty looks and whispered comments.

Stop claiming that these reactions only happen to people with mental illness.

We posted about it last time I saw that graphic floating around; still relevant sadly.

I think this is referring to people don’t believe in using any medications at all?

Open Post: What is disability? What is ableism?

We recently answered an ask that queried a big question: how exactly do you define disabled?

We gave a quick answer there, but we’re opening the board up here to anyone who’d like to answer.  What is disability?  What is ableism?  What do they mean to you?

When answering please keep in mind that disability covers a broad spectrum and that there can be nuances.  Which is our fancy way of saying we want to hear from you, just avoid being ableist to people with other disabilities in your responses!
